On June 12, the President of Tatarstan, Rustam Minnikhanov, visited the Roghun hydropower plant (HPP) as part of his official trip to Tajikistan, the Ministry of Industry and New Technologies (MoINT) of Tajikistan says.
During the visit, the delegation was briefed on the ongoing construction progress and the operation of existing units at the site. Station representatives emphasized that Roghun — with a planned capacity of 3,600 megawatts — is the largest hydropower facility in the region and plays a vital role in Tajikistan’s energy independence and sustainable development.
Engineering progress and strategic dialogue
Officials of the Roghun HPP shared updates on current engineering and technical works, the implementation of modern technologies, and preparations for the upcoming phases of construction. In conversation with station representatives, President Minnikhanov highlighted the project's significance: “Roghun is not only a major hydropower plant but also a symbol of national pride and a testament to Tajikistan’s unique engineering achievements. In Tatarstan, we closely follow the project’s development and are open to deepening cooperation in energy, industry, and economic sectors.”
At the end of his tour, Minnikhanov signed the Honorary Guest Book, describing the plant as a “symbol of the region’s future development.”
Strengthening Tatarstan–Tajikistan Ties
This visit builds on an earlier meeting between President Emomali Rahmon and Rustam Minnikhanov held in April 2025 in Dushanbe. The two leaders discussed strengthening ties in industry, energy, transport, pharmaceuticals, and agriculture.
They also explored the potential for establishing joint ventures, including textile factories, furniture manufacturing, protective clothing, and medical product production.
President Rahmon described the relationship as entering an “active phase” with strong long-term prospects.
According to the Tatarstan President’s press service, the bilateral trade in 2024 reached US$77.3 million, more than doubling from previous years. However, both sides agreed that this figure does not yet reflect the full potential of their economic partnership.
