On Monday June 23, President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon held a meeting with Mohammad Al-Attiyah, Advisor to the Cabinet of the Emir of the State of Qatar, the Tajik president’s official website reports.

The discussion focused on expanding bilateral cooperation, with President Rahmon praising the current level of Tajik-Qatari relations and emphasizing the importance of maintaining high-level dialogue.

Key areas of cooperation discussed included:

  • Trade and economic collaboration
  • Investment attraction
  • Joint projects in energy and mining
  • Development of agriculture and tourism

The two sides reportedly also highlighted the importance of working together in education, science, and artificial intelligence, pointing to these sectors as vital for future strategic partnership.

This meeting builds on a series of strengthening ties between the two nations.  In a significant move last year, Qatar included Tajikistan in its visa waiver list, allowing Tajik citizens to enter the country without a visa for up to 30 days.

During President Rahmon’s state visit to Qatar in January 2024, the two countries signed nine bilateral agreements following top-level talks. These included:

  • A memorandum of understanding (MoU) on cooperation in emergency and disaster management
  • A joint action plan in higher education and science for 2024–2027
  • A foreign ministry cooperation program for 2024–2026
  • Agreements in culture, museum affairs, and charity
  • A MoU on financial intelligence information sharing
  • An agreement to avoid double taxation
  • Documents on cooperation in free economic zones

Earlier, in June 2023, the Emir of Qatar paid an official visit to Tajikistan, which resulted in the signing of 15 cooperation agreements, further solidifying bilateral ties.
