Bilateral trade between Tajikistan and Afghanistan has seen a significant boost over the first five months of 2025, reaching approximately US$40 million, according to the Agency for Statistics under the President of Tajikistan.  This reportedly marks a 31.1% increase compared to the same period last year.

Tajikistan dominates the export flow

Tajik exports accounted for around 80% of the trade volume — totaling nearly US$32 million — while imports from Afghanistan amounted to US$8 million.

Electricity continues to be Tajikistan’s leading export to Afghanistan, followed by construction materials such as cement, and smaller volumes of coal, mineral fertilizers, and food products.

What Tajikistan imports from Afghanistan

Tajikistan imports mostly agricultural products from Afghanistan, including figs, raisins, and cotton. Other key imports are carpets and precious and semi-precious stones.

Afghanistan among Tajikistan’s top markets

Afghanistan remains one of Tajikistan’s top ten export destinations, trailing behind countries such as the Netherlands, China, Turkiye, Uzbekistan, Iran, Russia, and Kazakhstan.

Tajikistan’s broader trade picture

From January to May 2025, Tajikistan conducted trade with 107 countries, recording a total foreign trade turnover of about US$3.9 billion — an increase of 2.8% over the same period in 2024.

However, exports fell by 11.3%, totaling US$780 million, while imports surged by 7% to more than US$3.1 billion.
