On the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Tajikistan's President Emomali Rahmon on September 22 held bilateral meetings with the Presidents of Vietnam and Portugal in New York to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties, according to the Tajik president’s official website.

In talks with Vietnamese President Vo Van Thuong, both leaders discussed issues related to  inter-parliamentary and interagency cooperation.

The two leaders exchanged views on increasing bilateral trade turnover and enhancing industrial cooperation, particularly in modernizing light industry technologies and agricultural development.

They reportedly also agreed on the importance of deepening ties in education, healthcare, cultural exchange, and tourism.

Later the same day, President Emomali Rahmon met with President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa of Portugal to discuss expanding the legal framework governing bilateral relations, with a focus on enhancing trade, economic, and investment cooperation.

The discussions also covered collaboration in education, healthcare, culture, tourism, and academic exchange programs.

The Tajik president’s official website highlighted the mutual potential of the partnership, stating: “The combination of Tajikistan's rich natural and human resources – including green energy sources and rare minerals – with Portugal’s advanced technologies and financial capital, could serve shared interests.”

These meetings underline Tajikistan's commitment to diversifying its international partnerships and engaging with countries across Asia and Europe in pursuit of mutual development goals.
