A new medical facility has been inaugurated in the village of Jovidon, Vanj district of the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO), with funding from the Government of Japan amounting to nearly $95,000 under its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) program.

Japan’s Embassy in Dushanbe says the opening ceremony that took place on September 28 was attended by Japan’s Ambassador to Tajikistan, Ms. Keiko Furuta, Vanj District Chairman, Mr. Najmiddin Davlatzoda, medical staff, and local residents.

Until recently, the community had reportedly relied on a deteriorating clinic building dating back to 1954, which was no longer fit for use.  The new facility is expected to significantly improve the quality of medical services not only for Jovidon but also for neighboring villages.

Addressing the gathering, Ambassador Furuta emphasized Japan’s longstanding support for Tajikistan.  “As a reliable friend of Tajikistan, Japan has been assisting the Tajik people for more than 30 years across a wide range of areas, with healthcare being of particular importance,” she said.

District officials, medical workers, and local residents expressed gratitude to the Government and people of Japan for their contribution.

Japanese officials reaffirmed Tokyo’s commitment to continue supporting Tajikistan’s socio-economic development.

Since 1996, Japan’s GGP initiative has supported 468 humanitarian projects in Tajikistan with a total value of $38.9 million, including 118 projects in the healthcare sector.  The program primarily assists local authorities, educational and medical institutions, as well as international NGOs operating in developing countries.
