The cost of obtaining a power of attorney to use or manage a vehicle in Tajikistan has doubled following recent amendments to the country’s Law on State Duties.

Approved by the government on May 29 and subsequently endorsed by parliament’s lower house (Majlisi Namoyandagon) on June 25, the new law was signed by President Emomali Rahmon on October 1. The changes will officially come into force one month after their publication in the state media.

The revised legislation affects all categories of citizens — including close family members, other individuals, and legal entities.

Under the new rules, the fee for issuing a power of attorney to children (including adopted), spouses, or parents has increased from 25% to 50% of the official calculation unit, which currently stands at 75 somonis. As a result, the cost has risen from 18.75 somonis to 37.5 somonis.

Here is a breakdown of the cost increase:

According to the Ministry of Transport, as of March 1, 2024, there are over 666,000 registered vehicles in Tajikistan — nearly double the number recorded a decade ago. Of these, approximately 587,000 are passenger cars.
