DUSHANBE, April 9, 2013, Asia-Plus – President Emomali Rahmon who is currently on an official visit to the Kingdom of Belgium yesterday met in Brussels with Baroness Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

According to the Tajik president’s official website, the sides considered issues related to cooperation between Tajikistan and the European Union.

A special attention was reportedly given to development of a new European Union (UN)’s Strategy for Central Asia for 2014-2020.

President Rahmon noted that regional security after withdrawal of NATO forces from Afghanistan, fight against terrorism and extremism and other global challenges as well as expansion of regional cooperation in Central Asia must be priorities of cooperation between the European Union and Central Asia.

Taking into consideration Afghanistan’s needs, the sides reportedly also pointed to the necessity of supporting enhancement of production sector of Tajikistan’s economy.

Yesterday, President Rahmon also met with Mr. Dirk Lambrechts, President of the Health Care Association of Belgium.

The two reportedly discussed cooperation between Tajikistan and this association.  The meeting resulted in signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on cooperation between Tajikistan and the European Union in the field of health care.  A program of cooperation between the European Union and Tajikistan will be developed on the basis of this document, the Tajik president’s website reports.
