Tajikistan and Japan have reached an agreement on financial support for the project for reconstruction of a road bridge at the 19th kilometer of the Dushanbe–Kulob–Khorog–Kulma highway (at the approach to Vahdat Township), Tajikistan’s Ministry of Tajikistan (MoT) reported.
The corresponding protocol was signed by the Minister of Transport of Tajikistan Azim Ibrohim and the senior advisor of JICA’s infrastructure department Fujino Tomoyuki at the end of last week.
The project aims to update the worn-out structure and reduce traffic congestion on one of the busy sections of the highway.
According to the Ministry of Transport, research work has already started — specialists are collecting and analyzing data on the condition of the bridge and the surrounding infrastructure.
The design phase is planned to be completed within six months.
It is worth noting that cooperation between the Republic of Tajikistan and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in the transport sector has been actively developing since 1999.
One of the first joint projects was the “Bridge Management Efficiency Improvement” project, which began in 2021 and was completed in 2024.
On September 13, 2024, a final seminar on this project was held in Dushanbe. JICA experts presented the results of their work, including the successful conduct of engineering and technical inventory and inspection of 1,643 bridges in Tajikistan.
To date, a number of major and minor projects have been implemented within the framework of grant and technical assistance. Among them are the reconstruction of the “Dusti – Panji Poyon” roads (stages 1 and 2), “Bokhtar – Dusti”, the construction of a cargo terminal at Dushanbe International Airport, as well as a section of the “Kizilkala – Bokhtar” road on the “Dushanbe – Bokhtar” highway.
