An Afghan citizen who had been living with his family in Vahdat Township for about two years has been detained on suspicion of murdering his father, according to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Tajikistan.

Criminal proceedings have bene instituted against the 25-year-old Parviz Davlatzoda under Article 104 of Tajikistan’s Criminal Code – murder; an investigation is under way.

According to the Interior Ministry, the incident occurred around midday on June 1 near a fruit store on Somoniyon Street in Vahdat.

Investigators say a conflict broke out between Davlatzoda and his 52-year-old father, Sohibdod Davlatzoda, although the circumstances and motive have not yet been established.

According to the preliminary investigation, the suspect allegedly stabbed his father twice — once in the chest and once in the back. The victim died at the scene from his injuries.

The suspect was detained by officers of the Vahdat police department. If convicted, he faces a prison sentence ranging from eight years to life imprisonment.

The investigation is being conducted by the Vahdat Prosecutor’s Office. The suspect’s position regarding the charges has not been disclosed.

Musavvir Bahaduri, head of the Committee of Afghan Refugees in Tajikistan, confirmed the incident and said the victim was buried on the evening of June 1.

According to Bahaduri, the family had lived in Vahdat for approximately two years. He said he was unaware of the reasons behind the conflict and noted that Afghan refugees in the city generally live peacefully.

The incident is the second high-profile criminal case involving Afghan nationals in Tajikistan in recent weeks.

Earlier, authorities reported the detention of Afghan citizen Rahman Muhammadumar on suspicion of murdering Khujand resident Aziza Vohidova on April 30.

Following that case, dozens of Afghan refugees living in a settlement in Sughd Province reportedly left their homes. Later, the State Committee for National Security (SCNS) of Tajikistan reported that some Afghan citizens had been deported.

In response to the situation, the Embassy of the former Afghan Government in Dushanbe sent a letter to Tajikistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs proposing measures to address the issue. Among its recommendations was a request that crimes allegedly committed by individual Afghan citizens should not affect the broader refugee community.

According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), 882 Afghan citizens have been deported from Tajikistan to Afghanistan since the beginning of 2026. Of those, 540 held official refugee or asylum-seeker status.
