The President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, has signed a decree requiring foreign citizens applying for Russian citizenship to provide a certificate of their criminal record status. The document has been published on the official legal information portal.
If the applicant has a criminal record, they are required to provide information about the committed crime and the imposed punishment, RBC reports.
Additionally, the new rules apply to individuals with dual or multiple citizenship. When submitting an application, they must provide complete information about their citizenship status.
An exception has been made for foreigners who have received temporary asylum in Russia.
Previously, the State Duma of the Russian Federation approved in the first reading a bill that stipulates the denial of citizenship, residency permits, and temporary residence permits to foreigners with with an unremoved or unexpunged conviction for serious and especially serious crimes
.
The authors of the initiative emphasized that the new regulations will not have retroactive effect and will not affect foreign citizens who have already obtained residency permits or temporary residence permits before the law comes into force.
Until now, foreigners applying for Russian citizenship were not required to provide a criminal record certificate.

- In Russia: the document can be requested remotely through the Consular Department of the Embassy of Tajikistan in the Russian Federation.
