DUSHANBE, May 22, 2013, Asia-Plus – Several jailed Afghan prisoners have been transferred from Tajikistan to Afghanistan as a result of an extradition agreement between the two countries.
An official source at Tajikistan’s penitentiary system says fourteen jailed Afghan prisoners were transferred from Tajikistan to Afghanistan last week.
A government-to-government agreement between Tajikistan and Afghanistan on extradition of prisoners was signed in 2006.
“Most of those fourteen Afghan prisoners were arrested by Tajik law enforcement authorities for illegal border crossing,” the source said.
Meanwhile, according to data of the Tajik Foreign Ministry, ten Tajik prisoners have been transferred from Afghanistan to Tajikistan since 2006, when the extradition agreement was signed.
Currently, nine Tajik citizens are serving their jail terms in prisons in Afghanistan. Six of them are serving their terms in the Pul-e Charkhi prison (also known as Afghan National Detention Facility) and three others in the Kunduz jail.
