DUSHANBE, June 10, Asia-Plus – State and prospects of further expansion of cooperation between Tajikistan and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in the field of transportation were a major topic of a meeting of Tajik Minister of Transport Nizom Hakimov with Mr. Mr. Jiro Iida, Resident Representative, JICA Tajikistan Office that took place here on June 3, according to the Ministry of Transport (MoT) press center.
The sides reportedly considered issues related to further cooperation on rehabilitation of roads, including implementation of the second phase of the Dusti-Panji Poyon road rehabilitation project.
They also discussed construction of four bridges across the Tebalai River in Kulob that had been destroyed by floods.
The two also discussed the possibility of participation of JICA in construction of a rail link connecting Tajikistan, Afghanistan and Turkmenistan and in rehabilitation of the Dushanbe-Qurghon Teppa-Danghara-Kulob road.
The sides reportedly also discussed an application by the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade to JICA regarding financing of the project for modernization of Khujand International Airport.
Mr. Jiro Iida noted that all necessary documents for modernization of the Khujand airport had been prepared and the issue would be discussed in the near future.
The Japan International Cooperation Agency is an independent governmental agency that coordinates official development assistance (ODA) for the government of Japan. It is chartered with assisting economic and social growth in developing countries, and the promotion of international cooperation.
Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) started providing technical assistance to Tajikistan in 1991, and Representative Office of JICA in Tajikistan was established in 2006.
