DUSHANBE, August 28, 2008, Asia-Plus  — Speaking at a plenary session of a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Dushanbe, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev drew attention of the summit participants to attempts by some countries to ensure certain interests by using coercive methods.

He terms actions of the Georgian authorities against South Ossetia as an example of such attempts.

“It is well known who really provided assistance to the Georgian authorities and even instigated them, pursuing their own mercenary ends.  Such behavior is inadmissible and should be stopped decisively,” said the Russian president, “In such extreme conditions, we will continue responsible and predictable policy in the region, and we express gratitude for understanding and impartial assessment of Russia’s peacekeeping efforts.”

Medvedev expressed confidence that SCO’s position will receive a proper international response that, in turn, will serve a signal to those “who try to claim black as white and justify the committed aggression.”

According to him, fight against terrorism remains one the priorities of activity of the SCO, and the SCO anti-terrorist structure is successfully acting in this direction.

Efficient political-diplomatic response of the SCO states to the situation, posing threat to peace, stability and security in the region, would be an effective instrument of addressing modern challenges and threats, the Russian leader said.
