Tajikistan expected to receive 6.8 billion USD in foreign direct investment

DUSHANBE, February 6, 2014, Asia-Plus — In a report released at a news conference in Dushanbe, Qodir Qosim, Chairman of the State Committee on Investments and State-owned Property Management (GosKomInvest), revealed on February 5 that Tajikistan is currently conducting negotiations with six foreign companies on attraction of 6.8 billion USD in foreign direct investment (FDI).

According to him the negotiations have been conducted since last year.  “To-date, we have conducted several meetings with them and we are currently developing projects.”   

Meanwhile, China, which accounts for the lion’s share of investments made into Tajikistan last year, remains the main investing country.

According to the GosKomInvest data, the value for foreign investment into Tajikistan last year was some 487 million USD.  A totaled included 227 million USD attracted by enterprises and organizations, 209 million USD attracted in direct investment, and 0.6 million USD of portfolio investments (portfolio investment is a passive investment in securities, which entails no active management or control of the securities by the investor).

China, Russia, Iran and Turkey are the main four investing countries and they invested more than 177 million USD in Tajikistan’s economy last year.   .

Qodir Qosim noted that FDI inflows had gone to financing enhancement of the country’s industrial, construction, mining, communications and energy sectors.

Foreign direct investment (FDI) is a direct investment into production or business in a country by an individual or company of another country, either by buying a company in the target country or by expanding operations of an existing business in that country.
