DUSHANBE, September 23, 2014, Asia-Plus — The Islamic Revival Party (IRP) leader Muhiddin Kabiri today visited the southern city of Kulob.

Mahmoudjon Fayzrahmonov, a spokesman for the IRP, says the main purpose of the visit was for Muhiddin Kabiri to hold meetings with voters and party members.  The meetings were reportedly held at the Kulob mayor’s office and at party’s office in Kulob.

It is the first visit of Kabiri to Kulob since June when he was pelted with eggs and tomatoes on his visit to Kulob.

We will recall that that unknown protesters assaulted Kabiri in Kulob after he arrived to meet with locals on June 10.  Kabiri was holding the meeting on private property after local tax authorities closed the IRP’s office in Kulob on June 9.

On June 12, seven people were detained in Kulob on suspicion of participating in the attack against the IRP leader; two of them were sentenced to five days in jail.

Founded in October 1990, the Islamic Revival Party of Tajikistan was registered on December 4, 1991.  It was banned by the Supreme Court in June 1993 and legalized in August 1999.  Its official newspaper is

Najot

(Salvation).  According to some source, the IRP now has some 50,000 members.  It won two seats in the 2010 parliamentary elections.  The Islamic Revival Party of Tajikistan is the only Islamic party registered in CIS Central Asia.  Current chairman of the IRP is Muhiddin Kabiri.

Women reportedly constitute more than 51 percent of the Islamic Revival Party members.
