Syria accuses Israeli jets of bombing two installations inside the country

Date:

DUSHANBE, December 8, 2014, Asia-Plus – International media sources have quoted Syrian state television as saying on Sunday that Israeli jets had bombed areas near Damascus international airport and in the town of Dimas, near the border with Lebanon.

The report by Syrian state television described the attack as “an aggression.”  Syria”s army general command said on state television that there were “material losses in some facilities.”  It said the strike benefited al Qaeda.  The national news agency Sana said no casualties were reported.

There was no immediate comment from Israeli officials.  According to

Reuters

, an Israeli army spokesman said he would not comment on the “foreign reports.”

The Guardian

says that speculation in the immediate aftermath suggested that the target of the strikes might have been advanced Russian-made S300 surface-to-air missiles.

Israel has struck Syria several times since the start of the three-year conflict, mostly destroying weaponry such as missiles that Israeli officials said were destined for their long-time foe Hezbollah in neighboring Lebanon.

The Jerusalem Post

reports that Syria has filed a complaint against Israel to the United Nations.  The complaint called for sanctions against Israel to be placed and said that the strikes “showed Israel”s support for terrorist groups in Syria.”
