DUSHANBE, December 23, 2014, Asia-Plus — To-date, the number of contenders competing for 22 parliamentary seats from party lists has reached 88, an official source at the Central Commission for Elections and Referenda (CCER) told Asia-Plus today.

According to him, five political parties have already submitted their party lists to the CCER.  “The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the Islamic Revival Party (IRP) have included 28 candidates in their party lists each,” said the source.  “The Party of Economic Reforms (PER) has included six candidates; the Socialist Party (SPT) – seven candidates, and the Democratic Party (DPT) – four candidates.”

“Besides, the Agrarian Party (APT) is submitting its party list including 15 candidates to the CCER today,” the source added.

Two other political parties, the Communist Party (CPT) and the Social-Democratic Party (SDP), will hold their pre-election congresses on December 27.

Tajikistan’s Parliament (Majlisi Oli) has two chambers: the Assembly of Representatives (Majlisi Namoyandagon) and the National Assembly (Majlisi Milli).  Majlisi Namoyandagon has 63 members, elected for a five-year term in, 22 by proportional representation (party list) and 41 in single-seat constituencies.  Majlisi Milli has 33 members, 25 elected for a five-year term by local legislature (majlis) members and eight appointed by the president.
