DUSHANBE, June 20, Asia-Plus — State and prospects of bilateral cooperation between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan were a focus of a meeting of Tajik Ambassador to Tajikistan Asomuddin Saidov with Kyrgyz Prime Minister Igor Chudinov in Bishkek on June 19.
According to Kyrgyz government’s website (gov.kg), in the course of the talks, the two discussed a board range of issues related to cooperation between the two countries in different fields. They, in particular, exchanged views on positions of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan on the issue of rational use of water and energy resources. It was noted that Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan share similar stances on this issue.
Kyrgyz premier also underlined the importance of cooperation between the two countries within the CASAREM (Central Asia–South Asia Regional Electricity Market) project, implementation of which will give both countries an opportunity of profitably purchasing surplus electricity to South Asia’s states.
We will recall that Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan in Central Asia, and Afghanistan and Pakistan in South Asia have been pursuing the development of a regional electricity market. To examine the possibilities for regional electricity trade, the countries, together with international financial institutions and private sector have held a number of meetings so far.
The sides also discussed delineation of the common border of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan.
Chudinov and Saidov also considered a progress of implementation of resolutions adopted by Tajik-Kyrgyz economic commission. Both sides vowed to boost bilateral trade, which currently did not correspondent to its real potential.
