QURGHON TEPPA, June 13, Asia-Plus — Migrant remittances to banks in Qurghon Teppa, the capital of Khatlon province have been increasing.
According to Agroinvestbonk’s branch in Qurghon Teppa, Tajik labor migrants staying in Russia have remitted to this bank 164 million Russian rubles (RR) and $58.8 million US dollars (USD) since the beginning of this year.
Remittances in USD for January-May have amounted to 83 percent of the 2007 level and remittances in RR for the report period have amounted to 43 percent of the 2007 level.
Agroinvestbonk’s specialists attribute sharp increase in labor migrant remittances to rising prices of food products in the country.
Labor migrants are a critical component in the economy of Tajikistan and remittances keep many struggling families at home above the poverty line
