KHOROG, April 29, Asia-Plus  — A new health center opened in the village of Tavdem, GBAO’s Roshtqala district on April 28.

Speaking in an interview with Asia-Plus, the GBAO health directorate head Shodi Jamshedov said that the health center in Tavdem had been established on the basis of local rural hospital under Tajikistan’s heath sector reform project funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

“Some 124,000 somonis have been provided for the Tavdem health center project,” Jamshedov said.

According to him, medical personnel working with the center took a training course in Dushanbe and a bulk of diagnostic equipment was delivered to the district recently.   “The center will also organize seminars for Roshtqala medical workers on development of family medicine,” the GBAO health directorate chief said.

He further added that one of the main problems facing the regional health sector is shortage of skilled physicians.  “Gorno Badakhshan currently has 401 physician vacancies; at present, only 345 physicians work with medical facilities in the region,” Jamshedov said.
