DUSHANBE, April 26, Asia-Plus  — $300,000 worth of medical equipment has been purchased by UNDP for blood centers and AIDS centers in Tajikistan.

Ms Zulfiya Bakhtibekova, communication and public relations specialist, GFATM Grants Implementation Unit, UNDP CO Tajikistan, said the equipment had been purchased under grant funds of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM) to strengthen resource-and-technical bases of the blood transfusion centers in the republic.

According to her, the state-of-the-art centrifuges, autoclaves, refrigerating and freezing equipment, as well as laboratory HIV test equipment have been purchased for the blood transfusion centers.

“The equipment will be a great help for providing high-quality treatment and storage of donor blood and its products,” Ms. Bakhtibekova said, adding that the equipment was handed over to the Republican Scientific Blood Center for further distribution among the regional centers.

From 20033 to 2008, GFATM provided three grants totaling more than $22 million to support implementation of the national HIV/AIDS prevention program in Tajikistan.
