DUSHANBE, April 10, Asia-Plus  — The law enforcement agencies of the countries bordering on Afghanistan have not yet managed to discover channels through which precursors for production of heroin are being transported to Afghanistan, Vaysiddin Azamatov, the deputy director of the Drug Control Agency (DCA), remarked at a press conference in Dushanbe on April 9.

The Tajik counternarcotics agency hosted the press conference today to report on the results of work carried out in the first quarter of this year.

Azamatov noted that all countries bordering on Afghanistan stated that no cases of production of precursors on their territories have been reported.   “In Tajikistan, there have also no been any cases of production or transportation of precursors,” the DCA official said.

During the press conference, it was noted that joint operations carried out by officers from the DCA and special services of Tajikistan, Kazakhstan and Afghanistan in January-March this year led to the seizure of 132 kilograms of precursors and large amount of drugs in Afghanistan.

“The Operation TARCET carried out in cooperation with countries bordering on Afghanistan has also helped trace the movement of precursors,” Azamatov said, noting that the operation’s results will be publicized in media in the near future.

Over the first three months of this year, officers from the counternarcotics agency have intercepted more than 217 kilograms of drugs, including 76 kilograms of heroin.

In all, 1,700 kilograms of drugs, with some 418 kilograms of them being heroin, have been seized in the country over the report period.
