DUSHANBE, March 28, 2016, Asia-Plus — Syrian Culture Minister Issam Khalil told

on Sunday that ancient monuments in the liberated Palmyra would be restored.

Earlier in the day, the Syrian army supported by militias and Russian Aerospace Forces recaptured the historic city, which had been under Daesh control since May 2015.

“We will assess damage to the Palmyra monuments caused by terrorists, restore them, and promise that they will become just like they used to be,” Khalil said.

The jihadist group, which is outlawed in many countries, including Russia and the United States, has destroyed part of the city, which has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Head of Syria”s Directorate-General for Antiquities and Museums (DGAM) Maamun Abdel Karim told Sputnik Saturday that the experts were planning to start work in Palmyra in April.
