Kyrgyz president, German FM discuss regional security issues

DUSHANBE, April 1, 2016, Asia-Plus — Kyrgyz President Almazbek Atambayev yesterday met in Bishkek with visiting Germany’s Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who currently serves as Chairman-in-Office of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) with regard to 2016 German chairmanship of the OSCE.

According to Kyrgyz president’s press service, Atambayev and Steinmeier discussed bilateral ties and regional and international issues being of mutual interest.

They, in particular, exchanged views on issues related to providing regional security and addressing modern challenges and threats.

The talks reportedly also focused on the OSCE”s role in the development of democratic institutions in Kyrgyzstan.

From Bishkek, Steinmeier will travel on to Tajikistan, the last leg of his three-day Central Asian tour that began with a trip to Uzbekistan on March 30.

Frank-Walter Steinmeier is a German politician of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD).  He has served as the Minister for Foreign Affairs since 2013.

Germany took over the rotating OSCE Chairmanship on January 1, 2016 and Germany’s top priorities reportedly include rebuilding trust among participating States and maintaining efforts for achieving a political solution to the conflict in and around Ukraine.
