DUSHANBE, August 1, 2016, Asia-Plus – Tajikistan and Indonesia have signed five new cooperation documents.
On Monday August 1, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon met in Jakarta with his Indonesian counterpart Joko Widodo.
According to the Tajik president’s official website, the two sides discussed a broad range of issues related to state and prospects of further expansion of bilateral cooperation between their countries.
Rahmon, in particular, noted that Tajikistan was interested in expanding cooperation with Southeast Asia’s nations, including Indonesia, which is the country with the largest Muslim population.
Both presidents reportedly expressed satisfaction with the current level of bilateral cooperation between Tajikistan and Indonesia. They, however, noted that there was still considerable room for expansion of economic ties between the two countries.
The two sides outlined sectors like construction, new technologies and tourism as areas, which could drive a two-way trade between Tajikistan and Indonesia. President Rahmon invited Indonesian companies to invest in Tajikistan’s economy.
The talks reportedly resulted in signing of five new documents, including a joint communiqué singed by the presidents, a government-to-government agreement on visa-free access to holders of diplomatic and service passports, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on cooperation between the foreign ministries of the two countries on training of diplomatic personnel, a MoU on cooperation between the State Committee for National Security of Tajikistan (SCNS) and Indonesia National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT), and a MoU between the Financial Monitoring Department of the National Bank of Tajikistan (NBT) and the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (INTRAC) of the Republic of Indonesia on cooperation in exchanging information and combating money laundering and terrorism financing.
Rahmon reportedly invited his Indonesian counterpart to visit Tajikistan at any convenient time.
Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Tajikistan and the Republic of Indonesia were established on August 27, 1994. Trade and economic cooperation between the two countries has developed on the basis of the government-to-government agreement on trade cooperation and other legal documents.
