DUSHANBE, August 16, 2016, Asia-Plus – Over the first seven months of this year, more than 348,200 labor migrants, including 47,000 women, have left Tajikistan seeking better employment opportunities, which is 9.0 percent less than in the same period last year, according to the Migration Service of the Ministry of Labor, Migration, and Employment of Tajikistan.

Over the report period, Tajik seasonal workers have traveled primarily to Russia (about 341,000) but also to neighboring Kazakhstan (about 7,200).

About 193,800 people have returned to the country over the same seven-month period, which was 10 percent less than in the same period last year.

The reduction in labor migration is due to the new regulations for entrance into the Russian Federation on International Passports from January 1, 2015, and amendments in the existing Russian Federation legislation on the activities of labor migrants from foreign countries.

Tajik officials say the number of Tajik migrant workers who left for Russia and other countries in the first half of 2016 has dropped by nearly 7 percent compared to the same period last year.
