Tajik FM calls on international community to resume negotiations on the Middle East peace process

Tajik Foreign Minister Sirojiddin Aslov has called on international community to resume negotiations on the Middle East peace process.

The proceedings of the 43rd Session of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) were inaugurated in the Uzbek capital Tashkent on October 18.

The Session was inaugurated by the First Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the State of Kuwait, and the Chairman of the 42nd Session of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers, Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah.

The Interim President of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, delivered a statement in the inaugural ceremony, expressing the profound significance of the theme of the present Session (Education and Enlightenment: Path to Peace and Creativity).

Upon receipt of the chairmanship of the 43rd Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan, Abdulaziz Kamilov, delivered a brief statement in which he emphasized the significant role of the OIC, as the platform of the Islamic world, in promoting solidarity.

Tajik Foreign Minister Sirojiddin Aslov also delivered a statement at the OIC CFM Session yesterday.

According to the Tajik MFA information department, Aslov stressed upon the necessity of resuming negotiations on the Middle East peace process on the basis of the UN resolutions and other international initiatives.  

He reportedly also underlined the significance of involving Afghanistan in the regional economic processes, providing security of transit trade corridors through Afghanistan, as well as expanding economic cooperation, including development and implementation of regional and interregional projects within the OIC area.

The Session participants exchanged views on a broad range of issues related to development and implementation of joint actions and initiatives on ensuring peace and stability, as well as economic and social development of the countries of the region, said the Tajik MFA information department.

The Session is continuing today.

On the sidelines of the Session, Aslov yesterday met in Tashkent with his Kazakh counterpart Erlan Idrisov.  The two reportedly discussed state and prospects of further expansion of bilateral cooperation between their countries and cooperation between Tajikistan and Kazakhstan within regional and international organizations.  

Founded in 1969, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) is an international organization consisting of 57 member states. The Organization states that it is “the collective voice of the Muslim world” and works to “safeguard and protect the interests of the Muslim world in the spirit of promoting international peace and harmony.”  The OIC has permanent delegations to the United Nations and the European Union. The official languages of the OIC are Arabic, English, and French.
