A unique and extremely complex surgery was performed for the first time in Tajikistan: Tajik and Russian surgeons successfully completed the most complex reconstruction of the bladder and abdominal wall for a child with recurrent exstrophy — a pathology occurring in about one in 50,000 children, the Ministry of Health and Social Protection of the Population (MoHSPP) of Tajikistan reported.

The surgery was conducted in the pediatric surgical department of the State Republican Scientific Center “Shifobakhsh”: a surgery was performed to reconstruct the bladder and the anterior abdominal wall for recurrent exstrophy.

The surgical intervention was conducted in collaboration with leading specialists from the Institute of Pediatric Surgery and Traumatology of the Russian Federation.

According to doctors, the surgery was successful, and the patient’s condition after the intervention is assessed as satisfactory. The child was transferred to the pediatric intensive care unit.

It is noted that during the surgery, young doctors and residents were present, who had the opportunity to study modern methods of conducting such complex interventions and improve their professional skills.

In the future, “Shifobakhsh” plans to expand the practice of conducting high-tech and rare operations with the participation of foreign specialists.

It is worth noting that earlier in Tajikistan, a complex surgical operation was performed for the first time, which allowed achieving remission of type 2 diabetes and weight loss in a patient.

The surgery was conducted at the Republican Scientific Center for Cardiovascular Surgery. A 57-year-old patient underwent bypass surgery with a double anastomosis — connecting the stomach with the small intestine and the intestine with the intestine.

The surgical intervention was conducted laparoscopically — without large incisions, which reduced trauma and allowed for the patient to be discharged within 1–2 days.

The operation was conducted by the center’s director, Jumakhon Rahmonov, as well as surgeons Fathullo Boqiyev and Behrouz Hakimzoda, together with colleagues from the Russian Federation.

The center noted that the Tajik specialists received training abroad — in Iran, Turkiye, India, and Kazakhstan, after which they implemented modern methods of bariatric surgery in Tajikistan.
