DUSHANBE, December 6, Asia-Plus  — Iranian contractor, Sangab Company, ranted a contract to build the Sangtuda-2 hydropower plant in Tajikistan, has to date reached 35 percent of excavation work construction of the Sangtud-2 power room, which will house two generators, Khairullo Safarov  the head of the capital development department of the Ministry Energy and Industries (MoEI), said.   

In parallel, the company is also carrying out work on constructing infrastructure, which includes residential and administrative buildings, roads, etc.   “They have to date constructed 10 residential and 4 administrative buildings and construction of 2 canteens is nearing completion,” the MoEI official said, adding that construction of a 3-kilometer road Sarband-Sangtuda-2 is under way.   

The work on construction of the plant is carried out in accordance with schedule, according to him.    

It is to be noted that Tajik President Emomali Rahmon and Iranian Energy Minister Parviz Fattah also expressed satisfaction with a progress of construction of the Sangtuda-2 power plant during their meeting in Beppu, Japan on December 3.   

Under an agreement signed between Tajikistan and Iran in 2005, Iran contributes $180 million and Tajikistan $40 million in the Sangtuda-2 hydroelectricity project  Construction of the Santuda-2 station officially commenced on February 20, 2006 and the work on the project is slated to be completed by the end of 2011, but the Tajik side wishes it could be put into operation in 2010.   In accordance with a reached agreement, a part of this power plant”s electricity would be transmitted to Iran.

Once the 220-megawatt power station is built, all the revenue over the next 12.5 years will go to the investor.  Tajikistan will become the owner of Sangtuda-2 after this period expires.
