DUSHANBE, October 8, Asia-Plus — Officers from the ministry of interior (MoI) have intercepted a large amount of drugs in the southern Khatlon province. 

The source at a MoI said that their officers warded off an attempt by Afghan drug traffickers to smuggle more that 87 kilograms of opium into Khatlon’s Shuroobod district Saturday night, killing one drug trafficker and wounding another one. 

“The drug traffickers were trying to smuggle drugs into Shuroobod district under cover of night,” said the source, “The police officers spotted the drug traffickers in the border village of Odinaboy, Sarichashma jamoat in Shuroobod.” 

Later, the law enforcement officers fired at trespassers when they were trying to flee.  As a result of skirmish, one trespasser was killed and another one was wounded. 

More than 87 kilograms of raw opium, two sub-machine-guns Kalashnikov and 279 bullets were found on the scene of action.  No casualties among the law enforcement officers were reported, according to the source.
