Tajik-Chinese joint venture Chzhungtsai Mohir Cement, which is one of Tajikistan’s largest cement producers, is expected to build a large cement plant in southern Uzbekistan.
“Relevant Uzbek government bodies are currently considering our proposal to construct a cement plant with annual capacity of 1.2 million tons in Uzbekistan,” JV Chzhungtsai Mohir Cement deputy director-general, Barfikhon Kholov told Asia-Plus in an interview.
The plant is expected to be built near the village of Tuda, located some seven kilometers from the administrative center of the Boisoun district, Surkhandarya region.
According to data from the Ministry of Industry and New Technologies of Tajikistan, Chzhungtsai Mohir Cement has produced some 400,000 tons of cement over the first six months of this year, which is 43 percent of the overall volume of cement produced in Tajikistan over the same six-month period.
Over the report period, Tajikistan has reportedly exported 660,000 tons of cement and Uzbekistan was the main importer of Tajik cement over the first six months of this year (360,000 tons).
In January-June this year, a two-way trade between Tajikistan and Uzbekistan has reportedly valued at 128.3 million U.S. dollars, which was 69 million U.S. dollars more than in the same period last year. This consisted of Tajikistan’s exports to Uzbekistan estimated at 75 million U.S. dollars and Tajikistan’s imports from Uzbekistan worth 53.3 million U.S dollars.
Tajikistan and Uzbekistan reportedly intend to increase the bilateral trade up to 1 billion U.S. dollars in the near future.
