KHUJAND, April 14, 2009, Asia-Plus — The Qairoqqum carpet-weaving plant intends to produce soldier’s overcoats for Tajik army, Fazliddin Oripov, the head of the  industry, transport and communications department within the Qairoqqum mayor’s office said in an interview with Asia-Plus.

He said they had had to develop production of new output because demand for their product had fallen.  “Unsold products for a total amount of 700,000 US dollars have piled up in the plant’s warehouses to this date,” Oripov said.

According to him, two enterprises have been established at the Qairoqqum carpet-weaving plant – open joint-stock company (OJSC) Qolinhoi Qairoqqum (Carpets of Qairoqqum) that produces half-woolen carpets and Tajik-Iranian joint venture Taftex producing synthetic rugs and carpeting.  “In early April, Taftex went over to production of felted cloth,” said Oripov, “Some 70 percent of raw materials are delivered from Iran and the remainder is purchased in the country.”

In this connection, the joint venture is currently exploring the possibility of producing soldier’s overcoats.  A decision on this subject may be made in the near future, the Qairoqqum official said.
