KHOROG, September 12, Asia-Plus– In Khorog, the capital of the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region (Gorno Badakhshan or GBAO), prices of wheat flour and bread precuts have risen 20%-27% since August.

The price of a 50-kilogram sack of wheat flour in Khorog has risen from 76 and 80 somonis on August 95 and 110 somonis, depending on its grade.

Local experts predict further increase in prices of flour and bread products in the region.  Wheat flour is usually delivered to the region from other parts of the country, in particular from Dushanbe and Hissor.  Tradespeople working on the Khorog market say, “Today, a 50-kilogram sack of the superior-quality flour in Dushanbe costs  up to 120 somonis.”  If to take into account transportation expenses the price of the 50-kilogram sack of wheat flour may rise to 130 somonis in Khorog, according to them.

In the meantime, a sudden spike in the flour prices has lead to increase in bread and bread products in the city.  A 300-gram “non” (Tajik national bread) now costs 1.5-2 somonis, and a 500-gram loaf of bread costs 20 somonis and more.

However, prices of other basic food products remain unchanged in Khorog.
