DUSHANBE, June 14, Asia-Plus — The national seminar on the disaster risk management strategy and the disaster preparedness and response plan ended in Dushanbe on June 14.
The seminar was staged by the Committee for Emergency Situations (CES) and UNDP Disaster Risk Management Program under financial support of ECHO (European Commission’s Humanitarian Aid Department).
The source at a CES said that the seminar participants included CES Chairman Khaibullo Latipov, UN resident Coordinator in Tajikistan Michel Jones as well as representative of the Humanitarian Aid Department of the European Commission Regional Office for Central Asia.
“Tajikistan is in the focus of attention of international organizations dealing with mitigating effects of disasters through implementation of various projects for reducing disaster risk and improving disaster response systems,” said the source. “The disaster risk management strategy and the disaster preparedness and response plan are dedicated to coordinate activity and organize an efficient management.”
Over last decade (1997-2007), disasters have caused more than $300 million worth of damage to Tajikistan’s economy and left more than 400 dead in the country.
