On the first Sunday of April Turkmenistan celebrates the national holiday A Drop of Water – A Grain of Gold. This date occupies a special place in the national calendar embodying the age-old traditions of the Turkmen nation who reveres water as a valuable gift that symbolizes the life itself over its history.

The precepts of efficient use of every drop of water were handed down from generation to generation. In independent neutral Turkmenistan these wise precepts are revived and maintained in a worthy manner in the new strategic projects on development of water industry, the new initiatives of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, the national policy, the essence of which is reflected in the principle “a state for the people”.

Today Turkmenistan demonstrated the well thought-out, complex approach to the tasks of efficient water use, effective management of water resources and supply of potable water to the population. The Code on Water lays the legal foundation of the national policy in this important field. Effective water use is indissolubly interrelated with environmental security that acquires topicality in the modern world. Standing steadfast to a constructive dialogue Turkmenistan actively contribute to regional and international cooperation, global search for the balanced, mutually acceptable approaches to achieving sustainable development and solving water problems, TDH reports.

Development of water industry is a priority of the national policy. To date the extended network of irrigation canals and 15 water storage reservoirs have been constructed in the country. The plants supplied with state-of-the-art equipment to produce clean potable water were constructed and under construction in Ashgabat and all the regions. The very important components of social infrastructure are water treatment works and desalination units. The water factor has a direct impact on development of such a basic sector of the national economy as agriculture. The ongoing large-scale projects aimed at ensuring uninterrupted supply of water to the agro-industrial enterprises include the unique hydraulic structure under construction in the heart of the Karakum Desert – the Turkmen Lake with the extended network of main drains.

To ensure efficient us of water resources the resources saving methods of water application including drip irrigation are widely applied in practice in the country. The complex water saving technologies are applied in the industrial sector, for example, the projects on development of industrial breeding of fish in Turkmenistan.
