Last year, Tajikistan produced potatoes and eggs fewer than necessary

Date:

Last year's gross agricultural product from all categories of farms was 33607.1 million somonis (in current prices) and increased by 8.8 percent compared to 2019, the Minister of Agriculture Sulaimon Ziyozoda told reporters in Dushanbe on February 9.

According to him, poultry and fish product last year increased by 30 percent.

“Meanwhile, production of fruits and grapes last year fell 0.7 percent and 3.1 percent, respectively,” the minister said.

He further noted that Tajikistan last year produced potatoes fewer than necessary – 1.020 million tons.

“Average potato consumption per capita is 92 kilograms, while last year, average potato consumption per capital in the country was 70 kilograms,” Ziyozoda said.

Although egg production last year increased by 35 percent compared to 2019, this amount is not enough, the minister noted.

“Last year, we produced 983 million pieces of eggs, but it is not enough.  Average per capita consumption of eggs is 180 pieces, while last year, average egg consumption in Tajikistan was 160 pieces,” the minister said.

He further noted that Tajikistan last year exported 90,000 tons of onions to Russia and Kazakhstan.  Meanwhile, onion exports could be raised to 400,000 tons.

The minister added that 60 rural areas have capabilities to stock up rice, wheat, dried fruits and vegetables for two to three years. Cities, according to him, need to stock up more canned products.
