Rahmon receives World Bank Vice-President for Europe and Central Asia

On Wednesday May 19, President Emomali Rahmon received Ms. Anna Bjerde, World Bank Vice-President for Europe and Central Asia, according to the Tajik president’s official website.

The two sides reportedly discussed further prospects of collaboration between Tajikistan and the World Bank.  

Emomali Rahmon, expressing satisfaction with the current state of cooperation between Tajikistan and the World Bank, noted that over the past 29 years, the Bank has financed implementation of more than 100 projects in Tajikistan with a total value of 2.1 billion U.S. dollars, says the Tajik president’s official website.

In the course of the talks, Rahmon and Bjerde reportedly exchanged views on the situation in Tajikistan during the spread of the coronavirus infection, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the socioeconomic situation in the country, and collaboration between the Government of Tajikistan and development partners on the prevention of infectious diseases and elimination of the consequences of the disease.

The two sides also discussed mutual cooperation in the fields of energy, transportation, Tajikistan’s budget support, private sector development, and elimination of effects of natural disasters in the country.

Ms. Anna Bjerde became World Bank Vice-President for Europe and Central Asia on May 1, 2020.  In this position, she leads the World Bank’s strategic, analytical, operational and knowledge work in the region.

The World Bank’s active portfolio in Tajikistan includes 16 country and regional projects with a net commitment of over $868 million. The World Bank remains committed to supporting Tajikistan as it strives to improve the lives of its people and meet the aspirations of its young and growing population.
