Over the first six months of this year, the foreign trade turnover of Tajikistan has amounted to more than 2.9 billion U.S. dollars, which was 36 percent more than in the same period last year, Khurshed Karimzoda, the head of the Customs Service under the Government of Tajikistan told reporters in Dushanbe on July 30.

According to him, exports of goods over the reporting period have amounted to little more than 1 billion U.S. dollars.

In January-June this year, imports of goods into the country have reportedly amounted to 1.87 billion U.S. dollars.

“Compared to the same period last year, exports have increased by 24 percent and imports have increased by 64 percent,” Karimzoda said, noting that imports have accounted for more than 63 percent of the country’s foreign trade turnover and exports have accounted for about 36 percent.

In January-June this year, major purchasers of Tajikistan’s exports were Switzerland – 50.9 percent, Kazakhstan – 15.4 percent, Turkey – 11.1 percent, China – 4.5 percent, Uzbekistan – 4.3 percent, Belgium – 3.5 percent, and Afghanistan – 3.2 percent.

Tajikistan’s major trade partners from where it has imported commodities over the same six-month period were: Russia – 26.5 percent; Kazakhstan – 21.3 percent; and China – 17.2 percent.

Karimzoda also noted that no eggs had been imported into country over the reporting period and chicken meat imports had decreased by 13 million U.S. dollars over the first six months of this year.

“This is the result of exemption of the equipment and materials for development of the country’s poultry industry from payment of customs duty,” Tajik top customs officer added.
