DUSHANBE, August 17, Asia-Plus – An extraordinary session of the Majlisi Namoyandagon (Tajikistan’s lower chamber of parliament) is considering an amnesty bill today.  

We will recall that the Majlisi Namoyandagon’s extraordinary session was convoked for considering a bill on amnesty granted on occasion of the 15

anniversary of Tajikistan’s Independence.    

The session was convoked by president’s edict, in accordance with Article 52 of Tajikistan’s Constitution, during the period between the sessions of the Majlisi Milli and the Majlisi Namoyandagon, when necessary, the President of the Republic of Tajikistan shall convoke the extraordinary sessions of them.  At these sessions only issues by reason of which the sessions were convoked shall be considered.

The board of Tajikistan’s lower chamber of parliament considered the amnesty bill last Monday and recommended to introduce it to the agenda of the Majlisi Namoyandagon extraordinary session. 

According to information from presidential press service, the amnesty will apply to elderly, young and sick prisoners who are serving sentences for minor crimes.
