Iranian media reports say Iran and Tajikistan’s officials have signed two documents for cooperation at the closing ceremony of the 16th intergovernmental committee session held in Dushanbe, Tajikistan.

IRNA says Iran’s Minister of Energy Ali Akbar Mehrabian and Tajikistan's Minister of Energy and Water Resources Daler Juma chaired the closing ceremony of the event on December 28.

Tajikistan’s state-run news agency Khovar, citing the State Committee on Investment and State-owned Property Management (GosKomInvest), says the 16th session of the intergovernmental commission for trade and economic cooperation took place here on December 26.

The parties reportedly reached an agreement on the expansion of the bilateral cooperation between the two countries in trade, financial, energy, transportation, communications and modern technologies, industry, technical and engineering, health, investment, and tourism sectors.

They also agreed to launch joint industrial ventures in Tajikistan with attraction of Iranian investments, according to Khovar

The parties reportedly also discussed issues related to holding the Tajikistan-Iran Investment Forum in Iran’s capital, Tehran, in 2024 and intensifying activities of the Joint Committee on Investment and Implementation of Joint Projects.

According to IRNA, the main topics addressed in the 16th intergovernmental committee session in Dushanbe were: electrical communication between Iran and Tajikistan; Sangtuda 2 hydropower plant;  Istiqlol (Anzob) Tunnel; Roghun Dam Project; and Iran’s readiness to implement water and electricity projects in Tajikistan.

In addition to signing two documents for cooperation, the two sides on December 28 also inked a memorandum of understanding for holding a training course in the fields of water.

The previous committee session of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Republic of Tajikistan was held in Tehran on December 5-6, 2022.

Citing Iran’s Ministry of Energy website, IRNA reported on December 30 that while in Tajikistan, Iran’s Minister of Energy Ali Akbar Mehrabian has visited the Roghun hydropower plant and dam.  He reportedly noted that Tehran is keen to boost trade ties with Dushanbe.

Mehrabian said that Iranian administration will support the five Iranian contractors involved in the construction of Rogun hydropower plant in Tajikistan.

He added that increasing the trade exchanges with the regional countries, especially Tajikistan, is a main goal of the Iranian government.
