The Chinese state-run company China Datang Corporation (CDC) intends to build a solar power plant with capacity of up to 500 megawatt (MW) in Tajikistan’s northern province of Sughd.
An official source within the Sughd governor’s office says this issue was discussed at a meeting of Sughd Governor Rajabboy Ahmadzoda with CDC Director-General in Central Asia Wang Hao, which took place in Khujand, the capital of Sughd province, on July 15
The Sughd governor reportedly expressed readiness to establish cooperation on the production of green energy with an investor from China.
In addition, Ahmadzoda also met with a group of specialists from the Beijing Scientific Research and Technical Institute, who will conduct research on the construction of two new railway lines in the Sughd province with a total length line from Spitamen to Istaravshan and Istiqlol.
Meanwhile, the Chinese company reportedly plans to produce solar panels in Tajikistan.

According to the press center of the Khatlon region administration, earlier Wang Hao also held a meeting with Khatlon Governor Davlatali Said.
The Chinese company representative reportedly said during the meeting that they intend to build a solar panel manufacturing plant in the province that would generate clean energy.
Khatlon governor the proposal, noting that all issues would be resolved after visiting free economic zones and other regions in the country, according to the Khatlon regional administration.
China Datang Corporation (CDT) is one of the five large-scale power generation enterprises in China, established on the basis of former State Power Corporation of China in 2002. It is a solely state-owned enterprise directly managed by the SASAC and is the experimental state-authorized investment and state shareholding enterprise ratified by the State Council. The company’s official website says that with operations distributed in 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities across China and Hong Kong SAR, as well as more than 10 countries and regions including Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, Indonesia, Uzbekistan and Singapore. As of the end of 2023, the total assets exceeded 890 billion RMB, total installed capacity amounted to 180 GW, with clean energy units accounting for 46.24%.
The estimated potential of solar energy in Tajikistan is about 25 billion kWh / year. This potential is not used, if not to take into account some of its use for water heating.

According to the Agency of Hydrometeorology of Tajikistan (Hydromet), the duration of sunshine in the country is 2100-3166 hours per year, and the number of sunny days per year ranges from 260 to 300. This provides great opportunities for the use of solar power as an alternative.
