State Duma proposes to increase the term of military service for foreigners obtaining Russian citizenship

Date:

Russia intends to increase term of military service for new citizens. The State Duma (Russia’s lower chamber of parliament) will consider the possibility of increasing the term of service in the army to two years for foreigners, who have obtained Russian citizenship. It is also proposed to raise their drafting age.

In a move to tighten control over the naturalization process, Russian lawmakers have proposed a new initiative requiring military registration as a condition for acquiring Russian citizenship.

The initiative also includes plans to enforce stricter military obligations for new citizens, particularly targeting migrants.

The State Duma press center says this issue was discussed at a meeting of the State Duma Council on July 29.

This proposal suggests that the process of military enlistment should occur simultaneously with the issuance of a Russian passport.

The proposed changes could extend the term of compulsory military service for migrants to two years and raise the maximum draft age.

The State Duma aims to review these amendments before the end of the current session on August 5.
