Rahmon addresses the preliminary conference for the Summit of the Future

Asia-Plus

On Friday, September 13, the President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon participated and delivered a speech in virtual format at the preliminary conference “Global Call” for the Summit of the Future held by its coordinators – the Federal Republic of Germany and the Republic of Namibia, as part of the preparation process for the Summit of the Future.

The Summit of the Future will take place at the headquarters of the United Nations in New York on September 22-23.

The Tajik president’s official website says the preliminary conference members included the leaders of the United States of America, Turkiye, Austria, Switzerland, Brazil, Algeria, Botswana, Peru, Moldova, Philippines, Republic of Korea, Cuba, Cyprus, Egypt, Guatemala, Kenya, Latvia, Lithuania, Vietnam, Zimbabwe, Prime Ministers of Armenia, Pakistan, Canada, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Singapore, Malaysia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Denmark, Georgia, Greece and other UN member countries.

Global Call reportedly discussed the hopes and aspirations for the Pact and the Summit. This virtual live event is hosted by the President of the Republic of Namibia and the Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany.

It is worth emphasizing that the necessity of convening the Summit of the Future is based on the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the UN in 2020.  At that time, the member countries of the organization called on the Secretary-General of the UN to identify the shortcomings and problems in the system of international relations and recommend appropriate solutions.

In response to this request of the member states of the organization, the UN Secretary-General presented "Our Common Agenda" with attention to the need to strengthen the implementation process of the "2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development" and to convene the Summit of the Future.

The Federal Republic of Germany and the Republic of Namibia, through their permanent missions to the UN, are reportedly preparing and coordinating the final document of the Summit of the Future, which covers the problems and threats and challenges of the modern era, including climate issues, which have central importance in the international policy of Tajikistan.

The Summit of the Future is expected to produce an inter-governmentally negotiated, action-oriented Pact for the Future with chapters on Sustainable development and financing for development; International peace and security; Science, technology and innovation and digital cooperation; Youth and future generations; and Transforming global governance.
