The majority of products of food industry in Dushanbe have risen over the first six months of this year.    Prices for meats, fruits and vegetables have increased most noticeably over the last two months.

The rise in meat prices began in July and current price of one kilogram of beef at Dushanbe’s bazaars is 90 somonis and one kilogram of mutton at Dushanbe’s bazaars now costs 88 somonis.

Two months ago, beef and mutton were sold at Dushanbe’s bazaars at 76-78 somonis and 75-76 somonis per kilogram, respectively.

According to data from the Agency for Statistics under the President of Tajikistan, meat prices rose on average 13 percent from June to July and almost 30 percent compared to last year.

Over the first half of this year, beef prices have risen on average 13.3 percent and mutton prices have risen on average 10.8 percent.

Over the same six-month period, fish prices have risen on average 2.8 percent, vegetable oil – 4.5 percent, sugar – 4.0 percent, and cooking (cotton) oil – 0.5 percent.

Meanwhile, egg, wheat flour and milk prices have dropped 1.7 percent, 4.4 percent, and 3.6 percent, respectively.

In July, carrot, onion, cabbage, curd and sugar prices at Dushanbe’s bazaars rose 10.4 percent, 8.9 percent, 12.6 percent, 11.1 percent and 1.2 percent, respectively.

Merchants explain the rise in prices by the rise in prices of products in wholesale markets.  Dushanbe residents, however, believe that entrepreneurs unreasonably inflate prices in order to get more profit.
