In recent days, construction workers have started fencing off the iconic Rohat teahouse in Dushanbe.  A photo showing workers putting up barriers quickly spread across social media, sparking public concern.  Some citizens have even started a petition to stop the demolition.

The demolition of the teahouse was first announced last summer by Nizom Mirzozoda, Chairman of the Committee for Construction and Architecture of Tajikistan under the Government of Tajikistan, during a news conference.

“These buildings are outdated and do not meet modern standards. However, the brands of 'Rohat' teahouse and Lohuti Theater will be preserved, and new buildings will be constructed for them," he said at the time.

Mirzozoda also remarked that Rohat teahouse was once famous for its delicious dishes, especially lagman, but that is no longer the case.  According to him, new modern buildings will replace the teahouse and theater.

Meanwhile, CNN in February 2017 listed the Rohat Teahouse among eleven of the world’s best teahouses.  The ornate Rohat Teahouse in Dushanbe is one of the finest places to lounge and sip tea while enjoying city views, according to CNN.

The open-faced two-tiered dining establishment of the teahouse is not ancient – it went up in Soviet times – but it is designed to mimic something from an earlier period of Tajik history.  Many foreign visitors who pass through Dushanbe make a point of sampling the teahouse’s inexpensive fare.

For decades, the Rohat teahouse has been the heart of Dushanbe—a place where generations meet, where music plays, where traditional dishes are served, and where the spirit of our people is preserved.  This is living history, which we must pass on to future generations.

Attempts to get further clarification from city officials have been unsuccessful.  Neither the Dushanbe mayor’s office nor the Committee for Construction and Architecture has responded to phone calls.

Plans to demolish the Rohat teahouse, which is one of the most popular landmarks in Dushanbe, have sparked outrage and city residents have signed a petition addressed to protect the city’s landmark teahouse.

“We, the residents and guests of Dushanbe, are deeply concerned about the demolition of the legendary Rohat teahouse.  This place is not just a building—it is a symbol of our culture, history, and traditions.

We urge the Dushanbe municipality to:

  • Involve the public in discussions and decision-making about the teahouse’s future.
  • Recognize 'Rohat' as a cultural heritage site.
  • Take measures to preserve its historical appearance and function.
  • Provide funding for restoration and maintenance of the teahouse.

We believe that preserving 'Rohat' is not just about saving a building—it is about preserving our identity and cultural wealth. Let’s protect our heritage together!”

As of now, the petition has gathered 514 signatures.
