Among the countries of Central Asia and the EAEU, Tajikistan was the largest recipient of aid from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in 2024, followed by Armenia in second place. Significant amounts were also directed to Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Belarus. The lowest amounts of aid were received by Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and Russia.
USAID is one of the main humanitarian aid donors in Tajikistan. According to the U.S. Embassy in Dushanbe, over the past 30 years, the United States has provided more than US$2 billion in assistance to the country, the majority of which was provided through USAID.
Over the past two years, the Agency, through the World Food Program of the United Nations, has provided Tajikistan with US$20 million to strengthen aid to vulnerable households.
In the energy sector, USAID helped Tajikistan implement renewable energy sources and build technical capacity in Tajik energy companies.
For example, in partnership with the government of Tajikistan, the Agency installed a 200-kilowatt solar power plant with an energy storage system in Murgab district of the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous region (GBAO), which provides electricity to settlements in the most remote areas of the country.
In healthcare, USAID provided nearly US$38 million to Tajikistan from 2003 to 2021 to combat the HIV/AIDS epidemic. USAID also supported the country in maternal and child health, nutrition, and tuberculosis control, ensuring more effective and accessible prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Agency provided Tajikistan with US$10.2 million to fight the pandemic. The U.S. government, through USAID, donated over 1.8 million doses of the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines to Tajikistan.
For education development, the organization provided around US$60 million to Tajikistan from 2002 to 2021.
USAID promoted the rights of Tajik migrants by raising awareness about safe migration through radio programs and video lessons. Through its hotline, the Agency provided legal and psychological consultations to around 63,000 Tajik citizens.
In 2024, the bilateral trade between Tajikistan and the United States valued at about US$100 million, with over 70% of this figure coming from U.S. exports to Tajikistan. U.S. direct investments in Tajikistan’s economy from 2014 to 2022 totaled around US$500 million.
In 2024, the United States provided humanitarian aid to Tajikistan worth over US$17.3 million, which accounted for 15.8% of the total humanitarian aid received by the country during that period.
