The Director of the Post Office in the city of Hisor, Ms. N.R. Karimova, is accused of embezzling more than 103,400 somonis (US$9,500), says the press center of the of the Agency for State Financial Control and Combating Corruption under the President of Tajikistan.

“Ms. Karimova collected 365,178 somonis for newspaper and magazine subscriptions for the city's schools for the 2024-2025 academic year.  However, only 261,771 somonis were transferred to the Post Office's account, and the remaining amount was embezzled by Karimova,” the statement reads.

Criminal proceedings have been instituted against her under Article 245 (3) of Tajikistan’s Penal Code — embezzlement and misappropriation.  The investigation has reportedly been completed, and the case has moved to a court for further consideration.

If found guilty, Karimova faces a fine ranging from 1,092 to 1,824 calculation indicators (from 81,900 to 136,800 somonis, with one indicator = 75 somonis) or imprisonment for a term of 6 to 10 years.

According to data from the anticorruption agency, 2,323 corruption crimes were detected in Tajikistan in 2024.  Local government employees (257 crimes), the education and science sector (172 cases), and the Ministry of Defense (171 cases) were the most frequent offenders.

In the 2024 Corruption Perception Index, Tajikistan scored 19 points, a change of -1 compared to the previous year, placing the country 164th out of 180 countries.
