Tajikistan’s Prime Minister has promised the country’s energy independence by August 2027

Prime Minister of Tajikistan Kohir Rasulzoda said that all the instructions of President Emomali Rahmon to achieve the country's energy independence will be completed on time by August 2027 and "at a high quality level," the press service of the Head of the Republic of Tajikistan reports.

"Work in all directions is continuing systematically," the Prime Minister said today, August 27, during a meeting between the president and employees of the Rogun hydroelectric power station and assets of the city of Rogun.

During his speech, Emomali Rahmon noted that the full launch of the Rogun HPP will ensure "the prosperity of Tajikistan today and tomorrow, a happy life for present and future generations."

He stressed that the first two units of the plant have produced 9.1 billion kilowatthours of electricity worth 2.1 billion somoni since commissioning.

According to the president, in 2026 it is expected to replace the temporary impellers of the fifth and sixth units with permanent impellers, as this step is implemented, the volume of electricity production will increase even more.

He stressed that since the beginning of 2025, 4.3 billion somoni ($451 million) have been allocated for the implementation of works at the expense of budgetary funds. In general, according to him, from 2008 to the present, over 48.1 billion somoni have been spent on the completion of the station from the state budget and other sources.

The President noted that Webuild has been instructed to raise the dam level on time and ensure that the reservoir is filled to 1,100 meters by the end of September this year.

He stressed that agreements worth more than $2 billion have been signed with development partners to finance the completion of Rogun, including grants from the World Bank ($650 million), loans from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank ($500 million), the Islamic Development Bank and Arab funds ($450 million), as well as a grant from the Qatar Development Fund. ($50 million). According to him, negotiations are underway for another $1.7 billion.

President Rahmon instructed contractors and responsible agencies to speed up construction work, ensure the quality and safety of facilities in accordance with international standards, and establish effective cooperation with financial institutions.

He stressed the need for round-the-clock construction of the dam, high-quality selection of contractors and strict adherence to the schedule.

The day before, Emomali Rahmon visited the construction site of the Rogun hydroelectric power station, where he got acquainted with the progress of work on the construction of the station.
