The Eurasian Development Bank (EDB) begins financing the implementation of a project to develop the institutional environment in the field of public-private partnership (PPP) in Tajikistan.

The EDB said in a statement that the project is being implemented in cooperation with the Center for the Implementation of Public-Private Partnership Projects under the State Committee for Investment and State Property Management of Tajikistan and the Russian-Tajik Slavic University.

The initiative is funded by the EDB Technical Assistance Fund.

According to the bank, the project is aimed at strengthening the capacity of government agencies and reducing the shortage of specialists in the field of PPP. The following events are planned within the framework of the initiative:

– the PPP Center organizes a series of trainings for representatives of government agencies and the private sector;

– RTSU will introduce a new discipline "Public-private Partnership", developed taking into account international standards;

– the EDB scholarship program for university students will be launched;

– creation of a modernly equipped classroom for learning;

– preparation of a country review of PPP development in Tajikistan.

Vladimir Yakunin, EDB Director for Tajikistan, stressed that the bank's experience in implementing PPP projects in Central Asia would be useful for training specialists in the country.

"Together with international partners, we have already implemented the region's first major PPP project, the Great Almaty Ring Road. This experience will strengthen the project teams in Tajikistan against the background of a growing portfolio of initiatives," – he said.

The EDB recalls that similar projects with the support of the Technical Assistance Fund are already being successfully implemented in Armenia and Kyrgyzstan.
