DUSHANBE, February 27, 2009, Asia-Plus  — Today’s negotiations between Tajik and Yemeni government delegations in Dushanbe have resulted in signing of two documents.

President Emomali Rahmon and his Yemeni counterpart, President Ali Abdullah Saleh, inked a joint statement on expansion of friendship and cooperation.

Besides, the health ministries of Tajikistan and Yemen signed an agreement on cooperation in the health care sector.

Speaking to reporters following document-signing ceremony, President Emomali Rahmon noted that during the negotiations the sides had determined priorities of bilateral cooperation between the two countries.  “We intend expand cooperation with Yemen in sectors like trade, infrastructure development and hydropower engineering,” Tajik leader said.

Saleh, for his part, noted that President Rahmon who paid an official visit to Yemen last year opened way for cooperation between the two countries.  “Today, along with issues related to expansion of bilateral cooperation between our countries, we also discussed the Central Asian and Middle East problems,” Yemeni leader said.

Today, President Ali Abdullah Saleh is also scheduled to the Norak hydroelectric power station (HPS).

On February 28, Yemeni leader will hold talks Chairman of the Majlisi Milli (Tajikistan’s upper chamber of parliament) Mahmadsaid Ubaidulloyev and Prime Minister Oqil Oqilov.

We will recall that Tajik leader made an official visit to Yemen on November 30, 2008.  During his stay in Sana’a, Rahmon held talks with Ali Abdullah Saleh, Prime Minister Ali Muhammad Mujavvar, Parliament Speaker Abdulaziz Abdulghani and a group of Yemeni businessmen.  Tajik and Yemeni presidents, in particular, reached an agreement on opening of Tajik honorable consulate in Sana’a.  Negotiations between the delegations of Tajikistan and Yemen resulted in signing of four agreements on trade-economic, scientific-technical and educational cooperation as well as political consultations.  Rahmon’s meeting with Yemeni businessmen focused on ways to strengthen economic, commercial and investment cooperation between the businessmen of both countries.  They also reviewed the available opportunities of investment between the two countries.

According to the MFA information department, diplomatic relations between Tajikistan and Yemen were established in February 1997.
